Toyota Motor Corporation is set to release their long awaited powertrain overhaul.  14 new overhauled gasoline engines with improved fuel efficiency of at least 10% will be released through 2015.  Atkinson cycle engines has had a reputation of low power, however Toyota is claiming they have boosted the performance of the engines by increasing combustion ratios. The new technology will underpin engines by using direct injection and turbocharging.

Once reserved for electric-gasoline hybrids the clean burning Atkinson cycle engines will be used across the lineup of non-hybrid vehicles from compact to premium covering 30% of Toyota's lineup. Toyota has not announced which specific vehicles will get these engines.

This marks a couple of first for Toyota Motor Corporation. This will be Toyota's first Atkinson cycle power used in a non-hybrid and they are the first engines developed at Toyota's Powertrain Joint Development Building, a twelve story research and development center that opened last year.
