Overstated fuel economy ratings by Hyundai and Kia

Hyundai and Kia officials apologize and admit overstated mileage placing the blame on inaccurate internal testing procedures for the mistakes. Both companies agreed to pay close to $400 million to settle consumer lawsuits for overstated fuel economy ratings on approximately 900,000 cars sold in the U.S. market. After disclosing in November of 2012 that the companies had sold approximately 300,000 Kia and 600,000 Hyundai with overstated fuel economy the companies received dozens of class-action lawsuits. The proposed settlements are subject to court review which is slated for early 2014.
